Court seeks replies on LG polls

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday looked for the Inside Service's answer on requests concerning neighborhood government races in the administrative capital.

The appeals of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the Federation were heard by an IHC bench comprised of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Saman Raffat Imtiaz against the decision of a one-member bench.
At the beginning of the hearing, Additional Attorney General Munawar Duggal stated that the Islamabad Capital Territory LG (Amendment) Bill had been approved by the joint session of the parliament and would take effect on February 25.
The chief justice inquired about the feasibility of holding elections in 125 union councils and whether there was any assurance that the number of union councils would not be increased again, given that the new law gave the Federal Government the authority to do so. There was no great explanation for expanding the quantity of UCs, he commented. According to the AAG, the ECP was required to perform new delimitation in the 125 UCs.
The institution could finish the delimitation process in 60 days, according to Director General Law of the ECP, and then the election schedule could be released.
He also stated that after receiving instructions, he would inform the court of the new LG polling date. The Advocate General of Islamabad stated that the Interior Ministry's opinion on the subject should also be sought.
